astro-babys guide to stripping and rebuilding the Synta EQ6/Orion Atlas mount
The Synta HEQ5 Equatorial Mount There seems to be few good manuals for the EQ6 mount online as regards stripping the mount down, cleaning and lubricating etc. This is my effort at providing a comprehensive and easy to follow guide for the strip down, cleaning and rebuilding of the EQ6. The EQ6, EQ6 Syntrek and EQ6 Pro along with the Orion Atlas versions are all the same basic mount - the only difference in the Syntrek/GoTo versions is the motors, the power board, the main board, the handcontroller and the cosmetics. The strip down procedure will be identical.

This guide will give you all you need to know and comprehensive instructions but you will require a lot of tools and a fair degree of engineering ability

CAUTION - The EQ6 is a very tough challenge and unless you have a fair degree of technical ability I would advise against attempting a rebuild. However, you can with a modicum of tools and some patience tune the worm gear to reduce play in the mounts axis.

1 - Strip Down and Cleaning of the Declination Axis
2 - Lubrication and Reassembly of the Declination Axis
3 - Strip Down and Cleaning of the Right Ascension Axis
4 - Lubrication and Reassambly of the Right Ascension Axis
5 - Worm Gear Adjustment, Motor Removal/Installation, Misc.

My thanks to James at FLO for allowing me to work on his own EQ6 and also to Matt at Astronomia for the loan of the EQ6 tripod for final testing.
